Field expedient sunglasses repair with gorilla tape

Just like paracord; carrying a few feet of gorilla tape comes in handy. I wrap a few feet around a golf pencil. This repair to my broken sunglasses makes them much more comfortable until a permanent repair or replacement! #preppertalk #Preppers #survivalist #paracordist #preparedness

Building the better mousetrap

I first learned of this awesome "self resetting" mousetrap design on Pinterest.  We don't worry much about mice at home because our cats usually take care of business. However, the garage has recently shown "evidence" of their presence. Together my lovely assistant and I assembled this trap last evening. Before I went to bed it had already taken three mice; and this photo shows the morning view. Every impressive to say the least. All you need that's not shown is a ramp to the top edge (near the hanger) and push the can a couple inches from that edge. I used a hammer from an adjacent box that I know they were getting on rather than a ramp from the floor. You may have seen my successful kills at the office with figure four dead falls. Those are fun but require special skill and kill only once before requiring reset. The bucket trap here is so  simple a kid could make it with a bit of help with the drill. For you have a heart types, just leave out the water so they don't drown. Send them in their way out back so they can begin their journey back to your home. Just do it before they go all lord of the flies on each other and you end up with 4 skeletons and one fat rat!

Got any Native American knowledge?

I had the great pleasure of spending last Saturday at my parents house with my kids. They have retired to their dream home in Milton, NH on nearly 60 acres of land surrounded by other large wooded parcels. They have been hard at work cutting trails and exploring the land. They brought us to the "Ledges" shown in the first three photos below. Locals told my parents that Native Americans stopped here regularly to survey the surrounding areas because of the view from this perch. My parents observed the two unusual formations in the rock (close up photos below) that appear to be man made. It is a mystery to us what they may have been used for. Any ideas? I bet someone out there might know. Take a look and email me with your thoughts to theparacordist@gmail.com.

This first picture is showing a larger portion of the ledge, with one of the areas in question located in the middle of the photo, just below the center.
Any clues? This looks too "intentional" to be a natural occurrence. We were thinking maybe sharpening spears or arrow heads, but that does not really explain the configuration.
This was the second spot we found, not quite as defined as the first, but still looks man-made / un-natural.
We spent some time at this overlook on the property. I helped dad move some firewood from a lower ledge into place for hauling back to the house at a future time. There are some points of interest in the distance including towers, peaks, farms and small clearings on roadways (from which my parents would like to look back and see their ledge). I took some accurate bearings with my CAMMENGA MODEL 3H TRITIUM LENSATIC COMPASS so that I could do some mapwork back at home. This sort of activity is fun and allows you to get to know your compass very well; practicing skills critical to effective land navigation. I'm planning to do some future blogs and/or youtube videos on land navigation and may use this scenario as a teaching tool.

Photo Caption Contest

Best caption gets a free Door Knocker! This photo was taken by chance as I was taking a pic of the view and my dad threw his hands up while explaining something to me. I thought it was screaming for a caption. For background purpose, my dad dreamed his whole life for a place like this. Now he's got it. Keep that in mind because the winning caption will be put on this photo and framed as a gift for my dad. Winner will be selected at the end of this week (Sunday 10/20/13). Please email your entry to theparacordist@gmail.com.
