Boatswain's Handcuffs - How to Tie These Self Securing PrusikKnot-Based Paracord 550 Cord Restraints

Earlier this evening I received this tweet https://twitter.com/knoxrover/status/317399362164649985 from @knoxrover asking if I was familiar with Boatswain's Handcuffs. I knew of this style: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handcuff_knot, but after he tweeted the photo (below), I realized this was something different. Looking at it I saw it was based on a Prusik knot. With a minute and about 4' of paracord, I was able to reverse engineer the knot.

First, tie the Prusik Knot around your finger, as shown or optionally with an additional pass.

Second, take each working end and insert through the Prusik Knot.
Finally remove from finger and work the Prusik tight. The paracord handcuffs are ready to use. Simple place hands in loops. Pull ends to tighten. The nature of the Prusik Knot is such that attempts to pull hands apart will only tighten the knot's grip.

  2. Hey Kevin, really enjoy your stuff. Have gotten so many great ideas from you.
This knot did not work for me. Tied just like you show in the pictures, and then added a third wrap. Even went to Grog's to make sure I was tying the Prusiks knot corectly. Yes, the Prusik knot tightens down but it will slide as intended, so that when the cuffs were tightened down just a slight wiggling would slide the looped end and they would come loose. This could be because of the slickness of the Paracord that I used, I don't have any cotton cord like in the picture that Cholmondeley sent you. This might work better due to the less slickness of the cord I will have to find some cotton cord to try this theory.

  3. Adding a few extra turns around your thumb will help give a better grip on the P-chord. Also, the added size when done correctly will add pressure to the Radian or Median nerve. Alway's back up the knot with a hitch if possible.
